An upgrade has two parts: migrating your database and porting your custom code. Both must be tested before the real switch.
Recommended steps
- List every installed module and identify which ones are custom or from third parties.
- For Enterprise, request an upgraded test database through the Odoo upgrade service; for Community, use OpenUpgrade scripts.
- Port custom modules to the new version and remove customizations that the new standard now covers.
- Run a full test cycle on the upgraded copy: invoices, stock moves, payroll, reports and integrations.
- Fix issues, repeat the test upgrade with fresh data, then schedule the production upgrade during a quiet period.
Always keep a verified backup of the old database. Skipping versions is possible through the upgrade service, but the testing effort grows with the number of customizations.
